First Photos of the Year

DaGoddess @ 16:10

Found these on the way from the car to the labyrinth on the 1st. Not sure what kind of flower this is. Looks like a hibiscus, but it has too many stamen/pistil thingies and they’re shaped all wrong. Anyhow, the blooms are enormous and the buds are as big as my fist.

Check out the wild color of the stripes inside the flowers! Very bold. I wish I knew what these were called. If you know, feel free to shout out the answer. We don’t stand on formality around here when it comes to things like this.

  1. Wow… they’re amazing…! They really do look like hibiscus. There are scads of varieties, I think.

  2. Yeah, but these don’t have the hibiscus stamen/pistil going on. I’ve asked Gardenwife Kimberley to help with the identification. If she doesn’t know, she’ll know someone who will. She’s smart that way.

And speaking of Kimberley, can y’all say a prayer for her dad, please? He’s in the hospital.

    Thanks.

  3. The inside stripes are amazing. And no, no real idea except it looks like a few varieties of daylily. (Ed Brown?)

PS These photos are darker than usual. As someone who’s having issues processing images on my laptop for regular brighter monitors, I’ve been playing a little guessing.

  4. Yeah, I thought of daylilies, too, T, but the petals aren’t quite similar enough.

You workin’ on a Mac? Macs are notorious for being a little dark. I was actually thinking some of these are too bright. Guess maybe we both need to calibrate.

  5. Actually if they’re left alone Apple standalone monitors are calibrated SWOP for print. That means they’ll be a little lighter because images get darker. However, I’m pretty sure this laptop is not SWOP certified.

We need a third opinion. Got new pics at Flickr btw, link to my name)

  6. Re Flickr: I usually get updates via email, but I like when you tell me even more!

As for Mac laptops, they are definitely darker. Calibration is off. I’ve read enough tutorials on compensation for that exact problem and the best solution is to use a separate monitor. Other than that, there are ways to overcome the issue.

  7. Hmmmm, those leaves are not daylily leaves, however. Were the plants sporting these blooms shrubs? Thanks for the the prayers. We’re waiting to hear whether dad gets to come home yet. So far, no surgery is happening.

  8. Aha! You can thank my friend Stella for this. It’s the Cup of Gold vine (Solandra maxima).

  9. Awesome, Kimberley! Please pass along the thanks. I knew you’d be the right person to ask.
