The Phone Call

I received a phone call tonight that was quite extraordinary.

Serenading me via cell phone, in turn, was Rick Derringer, Dickey Betts, and Robin Zander.

One of my friends is currently standing in the middle of this:

Universal Studios' Mardi Gras begins Saturday with a twist: This year's opening-night concert is a benefit for Asian tsunami victims and features a lineup of rock 'n' roll golden oldies, including Eddie Money, Michael Bolton, Rick Derringer, Chuck Negron, Robin Zander, Dickey Betts, Loverboy, Twisted Sister, Jacobs Loc, Brian Johnson and TorQue.

Oh my....we're golden oldies now. Those of us who remember the ascension of acts like the Allman Brothers, Cheap Trick, and yes, even Twisted Sister are now relegated to the golden oldies bin at KMart.

Fine. So be it. I don't care. They all sounded great!

At least the CDs are cheap. I love it.

I saw Rick Derringer open for Alice Cooper in 1978. I saw Cheap Trick live in 1979. Saw LoverBoy in 1982...I think. Don't remember much of any of 'em.

"Golden Oldies"?!? Classics maybe, but certainly not oldies. Oldies are what our parents listen to. That review must have been written by some 20-something punk... but I'll still look for the CD's in the bargain section.

I feel like that every time I post a "playlist"...
