God is NOT a Republican*

Sandwiched in the middle of the sixteen John Kerry for President stickers on the rear window of the car was a small square sticker that read "God is NOT a Republican!"

I pulled in next to the beige-colored sedan and was in the process of getting my camera out to take a photo.

"What??? Wha-a-a-a?? How, how DARE you park next to me!" came a shrill cry.

Ah, the owner of the Kerrymobile had returned. Better still, she'd spotted my Bush/Cheney sticker.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

The woman gave me a very horrified look and began to sputter again, "How c-c-could you? With that sticker! You should be ashamed of yourself. Bush is nothing but a Goddamned liar. He's making a mockery of the Presidency."

I asked her for specifics.

She had no reply. She stood there, turning 15 shades of red, about ready to stroke out.

Little Dude, ever the patriot, spoke up. "Please don't say anything bad about my President. He doesn't say anything bad about you, does he? And, it's not nice to say mean things when you can't prove them."

I struggled to keep from laughing. I grabbed LD's hand and headed into the store. Over my shoulder I called, "God may not be a Republican, honey, but he sure as hell voted that way in November."

* God's not a Republican....he's just a cowboy at heart.

Doesnt she believe in diversity? or must everyone have the same opinion on her planet?

well...the guys at RaptureReady.com tell us that God may not be a Republican, but he definitely ain't a Democrat. Seems like well all ought to be believin' in whatever they be telling us at RaptureReady...!

and all that.

That woman knows God about as well as she knows John Kerry. I have a bumper sticker that reads, "Don't hold strong opinions about things you don't understand." How appropriate for that situation.

Kind of funny, ain't it? A member of the "party of tolerance and compassion" not showing any? Oh, wait! They only show tolerance and compassion if you agree with them, right?

My dad's significant other is the same way. She was a huge Kerry supporter (my dad could not care less about politics) and told me time and again how stupid I was for supporting W. Like you, when I asked for specifics, I could refute each one of her arguments by saying Kerry did the same or supported the same policy. It ended up with her saying "He's just so stupid.", and I just shook my head. Some people wouldn't know the facts if they came up and kissed them.

That is CLASSIC!! I wish I would've been there to see that...
Little Dude has quite a head on his shoulders, that's for sure!

Ah, yes. The ever popular "God is not a Republican" position. Ya know what? I can support about 90% of the Republican platform with what the Bible teaches (at least two verses per plank of the platform, one from each testament). I can only support two positions of the Democratoc party, and only if I ignore the context in which those verses are found. Hmmmmmm?

I hope you bought Little Dude something nice in the store.

He deserved a bonus for the way he handled that situation.

You, too.

I have a bumper sticker that reads, "Don't hold strong opinions about things you don't understand."

Bumper stickers expressing reasonable views? I thought there was a law against that sort of thing. What will we see next, a bumper sticker calling for a shorter waiting period on handgun purchases or modest reduction in the capital gains tax?

Way to go, LD! We stayed at a B&B one time and the owner's 30-something daughter lived there. She was waaay out there, organic everything -- the type who had to berate every food others eat. She was as obnoxious as the vegan woman on the reality show "Trading Spouses" several weeks ago, that kind of in-your-face kind of junk. It really spoiled the weekend listening to her harping as she served us her organic (and mediocre) breakfasts.

Anyhoo, she had a bumper sticker that said, "I'm pro-choice, and I vote." When we left, we filled out the little comment card the mother had bravely put in the basket by the bed. We thanked them for opening their home to us, but told them what a turnoff the daughter's attitiude had been. We left a P.S.: "We're pro-life and we also vote".

Unlike that woman, God is also not an asshole.

When is Little Dude old enough to run for the US Senate? He's wipe out Boxer in a nanosecond.

Posted by: PCD at January 6, 2005 03:55 AM

If I lived in SD, I'd offer to buy LD an ice-cream cone, or a Slurpee, or whatever his mother would let me buy him, assuming a beer is out of the question. Little Dude is cool. Instead, I'll make another Amazon donation for tsunami relief, and I'll think of LD as I do it.

Rear window of her car huh, I guess she doesn't use that mirror thing either other than to put on her bright red hooker delight lipstick.

Dunno, everytime I see slogans like that I find myself thinking: "....did they ask him about it?"

:)

Good for LD {{{hugs}}}

LD is wise beyond his years!

God may not be a be Republican (I hear he's a Unitarian... or Episcopallian), but two week old kittens are...

See, by then they've opened their eyes...

Fantastic how LD defended GWB! He's destined for great things!

I understand perfectly well where LD's coming from(having 3 of my own). Just observe his Mom!

While waiting to board our flight the other day, I noticed the guy standing in line in front of me was 'bravely' sporting a campaign button on his backpack that read:

"MAKE THE SCARY REPUBLICAN GO AWAY"

*snort*

I pointed it out to Mike and said loudly "Now how did this guy know I was gonna be standing in line behind him?" Mike replied "No honey, he doesn't mean you. He means that other scary Republican, the ONE WE JUST ELECTED FOR FOUR MORE YEARS." "Oh," I said. "THAT scary Republican. Not us."

The guy gave us a quick glance and kept trying to inch away from us. I think Mike scared him.

Rude yes....but it was still funny.

The sad thing is that an intelligent person COULD make a valid defense of the "God is not a Republican" thesis (if you make the assumption that the government, as representative of the people, is ultimately responsible for loving one's neighbor). And an intelligent person wouldn't care who parked next to them, and wouldn't obstruct his/her rear vision to boot...

Several of my neighbors have signs in their windows which say "This house votes Democrat." If we haven't had a policy for decades of not discussing politics with our neighbors, I would have put up one which says "This house is an inanimate object. Its occupants vote on the issues rather than by party line." I'm pretty sure that G-d does the same.

"God is not a Republican"

IMLTHO (grin) God is not registered to vote.. so of course he is not a Republican.. Personally.. if there is a God.. he is too vast to worry about politcs.

Posted by: LarryConley at January 8, 2005 09:22 AM

Ok, I REALLY don't agree with this bumper sticker I saw the other day, but it got a laugh out of me. It said, in Lord of the Rings font "Frodo Failed: Bush Has The Ring."

Not only is God a Republican, he's also a pharmaceutical engineer. That's why he gave us humans the ability to synthesize Valium(R) to give to people like that lady you encountered!

;-)

The wonderfull thing about God is that He,She,It, is never anything so small as a Republican, or a Democrat, or a conservative, or a liberal. For us to try to pin our preferences onto Him, Her or It, is an indication that our thinking and understandings are unfortunately limited or misled.

This entity you call God surely must be totally, universally inclusive, which then allows us to think beyond such labels and make for a better world by shrivelling into nothingness insignificant divisions and petty judgements.

And now, a comment by your favorite Democrat.

God is not a Republican. Nor is he a Democrat. My guess is, he couldn't care less about either party.

Unfortunately, people like to categorize all Democrats as organic way-out-there types, and Republicans as religious fanatics. Neither one is anywhere near true - though there are those types in both parties - and it really disappoints me to see people buy into these stereotypes.

Did I vote for Kerry? Yes, I did. I did so for a lot of reasons, even though (as a campaign worker), I thought his platform was weak, and he was a less-than-adequate choice.

But then, last night, I watched "All the President's Men" again, and I was reminded that, except for Kennedy, Johnson, and Clinton, there haven't been too many good Democratic candidates over the last 50 years (for the record, Truman's presidency ended in 1952). A sad record indeed.

On the other hand, I'll toss this out there to think about: Nixon's acts were perpetrated by his paran*ia, but defeated by a public willing to trust the media. Let's say - for the sake of the argument, not as an accusation - that Bush did the same thing. His acts, of course, would be borne of arrogance, not paran*ia. But the real question is - would anyone believe it? Or are we now so cynical we wouldn't care? Food for thought, that's all.
