PINK Out

Would YOU believe anything this woman hands you?
As I walked with the CodePINK women two Sundays ago, I came away with several impressions:

1) They're nice enough ladies.
2) They're misguided.
3) Have no clue who their leaders are.
4) Some are more than a little paranoid.

Each of them had their reasons to join up and walk with the group. Many stated this was their first time out with CodePINK and they had discovered the group through the SDSU N.O.W. chapter. Does N.O.W. know who started Code Pink? Do they even care?

When I asked several women what some of their handout information was about, they didn't know. There was no attempt by the woman leading the day's group, or the woman themselves, to clarify what their statements would/should be if they were asked questions. To me, that's poor leadership...and poor activism. You really should know WHY you're there, who you're there with, and what the issues are. Sadly, the majority did not. In fact, one of the papers they hand out simply says: "CodePINK invites you to meet with us. There are no forms to fill out, no membership dues. Just wear some pink, and bring your imagination and desire for positive change." Well, with that much leeway, these walks can mean just about anything to whoever joins in the fun. Facts? Don't need 'em.

CodePINK'S founders. Sigh. Where to start? How about with the fact that their names aren't listed on any of the "information" handed out to the public? You have to go to the CodePINK website for that. (* - see extended entry for more details)

CodePINK felt harassed and intimidated by our walk with them two weeks ago. Five men and one woman, walking alongside them in the park, countering the CodePINK message with a message of their own - too frightening. Too aggressive. And apparently, too sexist. So, they needed to call in the goon squad!

Yesterday, while CodePINK was marching through Balboa Park, the San Diego Chapter of Protest Warrior planned to march along with them again. CodePINK found out. And they called for reinforcements.

Guess who was a part of the goon squad? Remember the guy who decided that targeting a child was his best chance at fighting someone his own size at the rally in June? Well, he didn't take photos or verbally assault my son this time, but a gal who was with the Workers World Party, A.N.S.W.E.R., SDCPJ, or whoever, was taking photos of the kids. Specifically targeting them. And, there were other people who felt it necessary to speak to the kids and make them uncomfortable. One man, sporting a straw hat and a pink bow tie, felt it necessary to hurl expletives and invectives our way, in front of his own children. It defied all logic.

Mind you, when we were planning to walk along with CodePINK this time, we were interested in continuing with our friendly counter-leafleting and handing out flags. It's amazing to me how threatened people are by that. So threatened by six people two weeks ago that they had to bring in some of the most offensive people in the activist community!

The verbal exchanges were the kind you'd expect.

Them: You're sexist and racist!

Us: How so?

Them: Your logo is a WHITE MAN with a sword!

Us: And if we had a black woman with a flower on our logo you'd get pissed about that, wouldn't you?

Them: You're keeping these women from their right to free speech!

Us: No, we're not. We just happen to disagree and are offering up our own views.

And them, specifically Red: This country disgusts me.

Us: Then why don't you leave?

Red: I can't leave! I was born here.

Us: The beauty of this country is that you CAN leave.

Red: I can't afford to leave. Why don't they - or you - pay for me to?

Us: Why should we give you anything?

Red: .....

Us: Why not actually work for something?

Red: .....

Us: Yeah. Thought so.

We said that a lot. "Yeah. Thought so." Whenever they couldn't come up with an answer for something, and before they could fall back on their "sexist/racist/oppressor" taunts, they'd have nothing. NOTHING.

From what I could gather, America needs to change everything in order to meet their demands. We need to provide free health care but do away with big business , adopt the communist philosophy yet still maintain everyone's rights, and we're supposed to stay out of other countries' affairs, even if they bring their fight to American soil.

You almost need a scorecard to keep up with all the things these people want. Almost. You'd have to care to know what their demands for the day are to go to the trouble of keeping track. You'd have to believe that what they're asking for is valid. You'd have to stretch your imagination and the mere definition of the word "rational" to give any credibility to them at all.

I walked away from my first encounter with CodePINK thinking that they were misguided and naive. My second encounter left me feeling like I needed a shower. By portraying themselves as victims of harassment by Protest Warriors, they weakened their own cause by bringing in groups whose agendas, while calling for an end to Bush's presidency and an end to the war in Iraq, are not about peace - as CodePINK promotes.

It seems to me that any group whose ideas can't stand up to a little rebuttal must not have that strong of a message. Doesn't matter to them, though. They'll keep protesting. And, as long as they keep protesting, Protest Warrior will continue to provide the voice of reason.

Note: San Diego Indy Media is hosting some of the "creatively" edited video that they took yesterday.

* The co-founders of CodePINK are:

Jodie Evans: She's been busy. Biggest crusades? Legalizing drugs, raising minimum wage for farm workers, promoting the Zapitistas in 94, working on "Stripped and Teased" - the story of the real Las Vegas Women (she happens to be one, claims the blurb on the site), the Rainforest Action Network ("Evans sits on the board of directors of the Rain Forest Action Network [RAN], a coalition of anti-capitalist, anti-corporate environmentalist groups. RAN’s co-founder Michael Roselle also founded the Earth Liberation Front, which the FBI ranks alongside the Animal Liberation Front as the foremost domestic terrorism threats in the United States. According to the FBI, during the past seven years those two groups have been responsible for more than 600 criminal acts and $43 million in damages**"), and a variety of other groups/causes. In her free time, "she plays the harp and creates shapes on a pottery wheel to feed her soul."

Medea Benjamin (the short version): "Many of the causes that Ms. Benjamin espouses are Communist in nature. The Washington 'peace' rally at which she spoke last month, for instance, was organized by the Workers World Party, a Communist organization proudly dedicated to 'fight[ing] against capitalism' in America’s 'racist, sexist society.' In years past, she staunchly opposed US military aid to those fighting against Communist forces in Central America. More recently, she has worked to take California’s energy production out of the hands of private companies and place it under public control. She favors the creation of a government-sponsored universal health care system funded by taxpayer dollars. She exhorts the US government to lift its trade embargo against Cuba – a nation she notably lauds as a place where people have managed to 'thrive despite the odds' against them." (Quoted from FrontPage Magazine.) She's written several books on Cuba (after visiting the country), some praising Castro's leadership - except when SHE was deported for writing an anti-government article for a communist-run newspaper there. And, while she's railed against the celebrity-driven politics of America, she quickly jumped on that bandwagon when it suited her. She's known to be overly dramatic in trying to make her point, too. Benjamin has taken on a number of global issues over the years, but when it comes to certain domestic affairs, she's remained mum.

I posted this on my blog last night about what most of these protesters on the far left seem to be saying, and it's not based on solid reasoning and logic. It's "Get Bush Out Of Office By Any Means Possible". That's all I hear from them. Damned be any opposing viewpoint or reasonably sound counter argument, they know what they want and we sould just listen to them.

No...Sorry. I can think for myself.

What's sad is, so many people are just eating up the vitriol from the left and liberal news outlets (CBS, ABC, et al) and not even hearing the other side of the story. I asked my parents last weekend if they'd heard any good stories from Iraq lately, and all they replied with was "No, but CBS keep tallying up the death toll of our soldiers every night". Gee, great way to keep up the morale on the home front, Rather. I forwarded Chrenkoff's Good News From Iraq series to them and they were shocked that they'd not heard a SINGLE one of those stories from the TV news or from our local news rag.

And I think that's what people like Red and those Code Pinkies are counting on. "Don't look for the truth, just listen to what we tell you."

I'm glad we have people like you and Lt./Citizen Smash keeping our voice out there. Luckily, I live in an area where there haven't been any protests of the kind where I'd feel it neccessary to create a new chapter of the Protest Warriors here. But if that need were to ever arise, you can bet safely that I'd jump to the challenge.

Thanks again.

Can't take their own medicine, can they?

After reading this post, and having read your June rally post, I can see why it is that the leftists are always using "children" as their excuse for everything... they're the most defenseless victims available.
I'm sorry, but anyone that would've shown any such animosity to either of my kids would have ended up in a chance meeting with my friends Mr.s' Smith & Wesson.

This is a perfect example of how far removed from reality the Left is. Somehow, if anyone disagrees with them, that person is not exercizing THIER right to free speech, they're oppressing the LEFT'S right to free speech. And it's perfectly OK for the Left to respond by threatening and silencing that dissent.

Hypocrisy? Irony? Stupidity? All of the Above?

I wish we could round them all up and ship them to the Sudan or somethign and let the terrorists deal with them. Then these poor excuses for human biengs can live under real fascism.

The main difference between them and us? Simple, we think. We know the issues, take time to understand them and form opinions, and we study. We study the situation, and the people involved.

Most impressive Da Goddess! Very proud of you. These women embarrass me. They fall into all the old stereotypes of women that so many have worked so hard to disspell.

Kudo's to you all. You handled yourselves with dignity and offered them respect that, to be honest, they didn't deserve.

At least your Pink ladies kept their clothes on....unlike the ones here last year.

A bit ago, I came up with the thought that if someone is secure in their belief, they would not mind questions being asked about that belief.

I am finding, however, that in many cases, when one starts to question about a specific belief, that all one gets in response is anger and or cussing. Targeting kids show how morally, ideologically and spritually bankrupt these individuals are. That is the only way they are able to respond, because they have been so brainwashed that they are unable to come up with any independent thoughts. Thinking scares them.

I have to quit, as if I don't, I will logically start into a certain political party. lol

This is the one aspect of bringing my daughter with me that I am loath (sp?) to confront. I want to show her that everyone in America is free to speak their minds and yet I don't want to "lose my sh!t" on some foul-mouthed jerk who spouts off in front of or to kid. (I mean, I cuss, but not around the kid).

Was this clown just looking to provoke someone?

And here I was under the impression that the Red Hat Society was the weirdest looking group of female earthlings upon which I had ever laid my set of 6 eyes. Thankfully, being so garishly dressed makes them easy targets when I go on my next zapping spree with a fully charged ray gun in each of my four hands.

As a person who belongs to neither the current mainstream "left" nor the current mainstream "right", I'm struck by how each side thinks that the mainstream media is totally ruled by the viewpoint of the other. Leaves me to wonder who the media are speaking for, if anyone.

This shows their ultimate goals. Pretty menacing, if you ask me.

The Pinks did and said what we expected - and were very obnoxious about our being there. But we were most disturbed by the father who was swearing so viciously in front of his own children.
So we started chanting, "No Filthy Language! No Filthy Language!". He stopped, but he was so mad, his eyes were bulging and his hands were clenched. If we hadn't been out in the public, I think he would have lost control.
Mostly, we see these people as immature, self-centered, narcissistic cry-babies, as are most people on the left.
But....they advocate the violent overthrow of this government and the subjugation of the entire population by anyone but a duly elected President. They side with Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, and Osama bin Laden. These are people to watch, and to be wary of.
To counter their poison, get every one you know and anyone you don't know to register to vote, and to vote to re-elect President Bush.
Otherwise, those dedicated to our own destruction will be in charge. That would not be good for children and other living things.

Oh Lord! Ugly! Gennie from Dizzy-Girl, her art teacher is one of them. Also one of the mothers that belong to the group, her son is a Ranger, went to Iraq, paid some people off - and was able to find the Ranger camp and was able to talk to him in person!

"Hey [name] ... your mother is here."

I'd die.

Interesting thought (spurred no doubt by a frightening lack of tech support calls today)...

Freedom of speech is guaranteed by the constitution as the following...

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Okay, so there we have it, *Congress* cannot interfer with our freedom of speech. Congress. Logic would dictate, that you have the right to say what you will, speaking out against the Government, and the Government cannot pass any laws that prohibit your ability and right to do so.

HOWEVER...

There is nothing in there that says that are not allowed to disagree with a person's opinion. That's what they're complaining about. When people don't agree with them, they get pissed and claim "HELP! HELP! We're Being Repressed!!" They don't get it. They demand you tolerate their ideas and their opinions, but if your opinions and ideas contradict theirs, you're oppressing them. That's a double standard, and makes no sense whatsoever.

Tolerance, but it's nature is the reverse of it's idea. That is, forcing someone who disagrees with you, to tolerate you and your ideals is intolerant of their opinions and ideals. It is not normal or natural, and becomes the opposite of what it is supposed to be.

(I may be rambling here, so I'll just conclude..) If they were truly believers in what they are proclaiming, then they would not only welcome the Protest Warriors in their midst, they would go out of their way to invite them for a civil discussion of the varying opinions and positions on the issues. Since they don't want that, they cannot be considered serious, nor can should they be taken seriously. Unfortunately, in this day and age of "Reality" TV, sensational news stories and liberal media...they're taken far more seriously than they deserve. And that's dangerous.

Posted by: DakRoland at August 13, 2004 12:58 PM

Dak, Dak, Dak....

There you go, trying to apply logic and reason to the situation... Those don't count anymore, it's all about the passion. Just ask the Pink Ladies.

I know, I know. Silly me. I'm one of those strange people that no matter what, I want to believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, I'm just trying to figure out their line of thinking. Occum's Razor may or may not apply here. I dunno.
