I'd adopt Josh in a heartbeat!
I've always had good luck adopting animals from shelters. Always. I've had many wonderful furry friends in my life. All but one came from shelters.
Most animals end up in shelters because the people who owned them didn't have the time or patience to spend with these animals.
Check out your local shelter for adoptable pets! Make sure they suit your current lifestyle (not the one you someday dream of having.)
Posted by DaGoddess at March 9, 2004 03:28 AMMy newest cat is a country dropoff. Aparently somebody once loved this little kitty. She'sw sweet, loving and gentle, but was inconveniently pregnant. Now she's fixed and has a home...
Posted by: mostly cajun at March 9, 2004 05:03 AMJust make sure you know what you are getting into when adopting a "used" pet. Although, all of our formerly owned pets have been great, there are some things you need to know.
Is the dog house broken? This was no big deal for us when we had to housebreak an 8 month old dog - but others may not have the patience or the time.
Does it get along with other animals (if you have other pets)? Cats and dogs that are older should at least be used to being around other species. A quick test for a dog is to bring it into the cat's area and see how it reacts. It should be curious, but not trying to knock over cages to get to the cats.
Is it good with children? This may or may not be important, depending upon your circumstances. But remember, even if you don't have kids, are friends or relatives that have children going to be dropping by?
There may be other important questions that need to be asked for your circumstances - make sure to ask them. Bad habits can be trained out of pets, but make sure you have the time!
We have had 4 rescued dogs and 1 rescued cat, and all have done extremely well with us. Just make sure you are ready to deal with little surprises since sometimes the people that drop off animals aren't exactly forthcoming with the "real" reason(s) that they can't deal with the animal!
Posted by: Bogie at March 9, 2004 08:57 AMWe adoped both of my wonderful doggies and I don't regret it for a minute! They are both beautiful, intelligent, bundles of joy.

What do you mean it's not that?
Posted by: Sigivald at March 9, 2004 02:06 PMAll our pets have come from a shelter or a "free to good home" advert or just appeared on our doorstep.
Well, 'cept for the fish!
And they are loved and cared for the best we can do for them. There's no better companion than a pet who loves you unconditionally.
Posted by: Rae at March 9, 2004 04:09 PMHey! Thanks for the link, I appreciate it! We've been doing these transports for a few months now and it's great.
Posted by: Annmarie at March 10, 2004 07:07 AMI just adopted two adult cats from a local shelter, litter mates, five years old, neutered and declawed. I have never owned a cat so it was quite a disconserting experience when one disappeared and I didn't see him again for 24 hours. I found the same cat stuck, I thought, between my washer and a wall.Anyhow things have calmed down, me especially and I know I am going to enjoy the unique company of cats. It is a totally different experience than owning a dog. My cats, Nala and Patches, are letting me stay in the apartment if I am on my best behavior. lol
Hope you feel better soon. Sometimes it is best just to bite the bullet, as it were, and go ahead and have the surgery. Why suffer so much when you can get relief.
