And The Lemurs Were Nestled All Snug On Their Rock

Being dead dog tired on the first day of the new year isn't anything unusual. However, I'd been up for well over 24 hours at this point and wasn't very coherent. Still, I was more than a little tickled when, as I leaned against Greg, a cute little old man with a coffee cup came up and declared that he liked me and wanted to know if I was single.

"Kinda, but not really," I replied.

I don't know what the hell I meant. Except that, happy as I am with Greg, I have a thing for cute little old men. But, this is also coming from someone who said "mistaked" last night.

Greg was amused. So were his parents. Rex was oblivious. He was busy staring into the money pit that is one of those stuffed animal grabbin' claw thingies.

My first breakfast of the new year consisted of a single scrambled egg, a bowl of grits, and bacon. Yummy, salty, crisp bacon.

After that, we headed home where we said goodbye to Greg's mom and dad. I enjoyed their visit and will miss them a great deal. They're truly sweet and thoughtful people. We had many days of laughter and aching feet. We ventured out and about here in America's Finest City...I only wish I hadn't had to work on their last night in town.

While they were here, we had headed out to the Wild Animal Park. It was a bright and chilly day, but filled with plenty of interesting things. One of my favorite moments was watching a keeper fling fish to the birds at the Nairobi fishing village lake. In the 30 years that I've been going to the Park, I'd never seen this done. Watching the pelicans fight over food was more entertaining than I had ever imagined possible...then again, I don't know if I've ever imagined such a thing. Anyway, just beyond the fishing village is an island for ring-tailed lemurs. Atop a rock, just under a large tree, two lemurs sat, entwined. Huddled close for warmth, they stared at us contentedly. Below them, another two or three lemurs curled around each other. Each of them snug and happy.

Here I sit. I made it through the holidays. I can look over at the sofa and see Greg sleeping there, cat across his belly. Downstairs, a child sleeps.

I'm a happy lemur tonight. I hope you are, too.

At last, someone who can solve one of my great mysteries - what on earth are grits?

Oh, and a happy new year to you too, hopefully it will be the year you make it to our sunny shores.

How cute. You and Greg are ring tailed lemurs. Now THAT is a visual.
Still, very loving.
