Nailed!

Da Goddess was nearly killed in a savage attack today.

Okay. Make that almost brutually injured.

Would you believe she was tagged by a Pelagia colorata?

We were not amused.

La Jolla Shores was relatively uncrowded. We had front row parking, lots of room to scamper and frolic, and gentle waves to lap at our ankles.

Then the stinging incident. Fortunately, a couple of studly lifeguards came to the rescue with a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol*. Actually, we were pretty grateful that I was the one to get nailed by the jellyfish instead of Little Dude. He'd been right there prior to running away from me and one of my generous splashes. Needless to say, I cursed the jelly and then tried to take a picture of it. (Camera is currently not cooperating with uploads....will try again tomorrow.)

We resumed playing in the water. Chased kelp and shells. Took more photos. Laughing and cavorting was high on our list of things to do. We succeeded.

Then, we were off to the Cove. We started with the Underwater Ecological Preserve. There are caves, reefs, and tidepools, a park and all sorts of interesting things to check out. Walking south a bit, we hit the Children's Pool. Home of controversy. We watched the seals play in the water and sleep on the sand.

It was a great day. Sunshine, surf, sand, minor drama, laughter, critters, and lots of love. Definitely worth the jelly sting.

*The uncomfortable stings are treated as follows. Do not wipe. Remove remaining tentacles with tweezers, gloved hands, or rinse with seawater (not freshwater, which simply increases the pain). Scrape the skin in one direction, downward, with a firm-edged object like the back of a knife blade. Soak or bathe the affected part in vinegar or isopropyl alcohol for thirty minutes or until the pain is relieved. This deactivates any remaining undischarged cells. If pain persists, powder and shave the skin to remove any remaining nematocysts. There are a few people who are allergic to the sting and may have difficulty breathing. In that case seek immediate medical treatment. Otherwise, this simple procedure is sufficient. Remember, tentacles can sting even after they are washed onto the sand.

I thought the usual treatment for a jellyfish sting was to have someone piddle on it. You mean I've learned nothing from all those hours watching "Survivor"?
Perhaps in the interest of science, we could arrange for someone to be stung, then test our theory, then compare the effectiveness of the two. Would have to be someone we don't like, of course. I doubt friends would let you pee on them, no matter how tight you are with them.

Oh, so sorry about the vicious attack, but hey, at least it wasn't your kitchen counter!

I used to put slices of fresh tomato on my jellyfish stings but being a nurse you probably have better remedies. Hope it feels better soon.

So is your name Joanie? Or is it Lynne?

Either wouldn't matter-save it shows you to be a total liar. Is there any reason why anyone should take you seriously?

Geoff, quit showing your ass. If you're gonna just flame in my comments, I'll ban you, delete your comments, and show the world what a little turd you are.

I don't know where you got the name Lynne....but, dude, you so need to get glasses...........and a FUCKING LIFE!

LeeAnn, peeing on a jelly sting is a last ditch option if you have nothing else available. Rubbing alcohol is the BEST treatment.

Ouch!! But it sounds like a lovely day anyway. Hope your pictures of the dang thing came out -- for me that's always the upside of experiencing something unpleasant!

(and I never hit submit twice...yet everytime my comments appear twice. I'm sorry Joanie!!)

I offered to pee on the wound, but she opted for the lifeguard.

Goddess, don't delete Geoff's comments, leave them so others can witness his stupidity.
