Whatever Happened To Saturday Night?

Da Goddess @ 06:00

I just want to go on record as saying I think Desperado was The Eagles’ best ever album. Hotel California is a close second, but Desperado was just so lyrically and musically magical that I almost can’t bear the harmonies when I hear them. They make me want to weep in absolute pleasure over their sweetness. Take “Saturday Night”.  Listen to that mandolin and the yearning in earnest (as if there were any other sort of yearning)…it’s simple, it’s complex, it’s gorgeous! And “Doolin’ Dalton”.  And “Desperado” itself. Tell me those songs don’t pull at your heartstrings and make you envision a time when you could just be wrapped in someone’s arms, slow dancin’ and praying the night could last forever.

Why there aren’t any Eagles vids for “Saturday Night” on YouTube, I haven’t a clue. Plenty of covers, but nary an actual Eagles version.

That’s all. Nothing else of significance here.

  1. I often find myself conflicted when it comes to the Eagles. I’m put off by Don Henley’s dour expressions and Glen Fry’s self-absorbed demeanor. It’s as if they don’t enjoy performing and/or take themselves too seriously.

There’s no denying their talent and musicianship though. Their ‘Hell Freezes Over’ DVD is amazing. I’ve watched it countless times, and it’s just like when JB’s ‘ANDY Live’ DVD is on…I have a hard time turning it off.

On balance though I’m much more emotionally tied to Joe Walsh’s music with the James Gang – in particular, the 1970 release ‘James Gang Rides Again.’ Bomber, Woman, Tend My Garden etc.

My favorite parts of the ‘Hell Freezes Over’ DVD is the guitar interplay between Joe Walsh and Don Felder.

  4. Damn right!

And I still say Desperado is the best Eagles album. I think, honestly, it was the last album they made before they got too caught up in themselves. It’s perfect.
