Christmas Just Got Cancelled

DaGoddess @ 16:44

Fuckety fuck fuck.

My Christmas just got cancelled. I was going to drive back to San Diego, right? Already the trip was not getting off to a good start when instead of leaving TODAY, I agreed to shoot a quick wedding on Christmas Eve. Didn’t feel like I could turn it down (even though it was a last minute request…again) because I’d turned down the last last minute request and I’d already had plans with out of town guests. So, driving Christmas Eve wasn’t what I really wanted to do, but I had pretty much made peace with it. Kinda.

Then the car wouldn’t start.

I’m pretty certain it’s the alternator. Cost to repair? Well, with the discount at the one place, it’s $350. Yes, that weeping your hear is from me.

I had planned to fly Little Dude back to SD on the 2nd after driving back here with him. Now…I’m not going anywhere. He’s not coming here (can’t even go pick him up from the airport were I to fly him out…with…money that I’m now having to spend on the car). I don’t get to see Mojo. Or the rest of the family.

From weeping to sobbing in one fell swoop. Right? I don’t even have the stupid 2 1/2 foot tree decorated fully yet. Christmas is officially cancelled. I give up.

Okay… after the car is fixed… after the holidays… you can drive down there…

Not the same thing, I know.

  2. Ohhhh… FUCK!!! :(

Do you happen to have any auto mechanics or mechanically inclined friends in your circle of friends or acquaintances that may be able to replace the alternator if you can find a used or refurbished one somewhere cheap? I’ve replaced mine before and it’s not the most difficult thing, depending on the car. Wish I was in the area, I’d help.

Hope you can figure out enough of a solution to salvage Christmas. Is renting a car possible for a few days?

  3. Give me the year, make and model of the car, and especially important is the engine type. Most cars were available with more than one choice, and that’s going to matter here.

E mail that to me, and I’ll do some research and see if I can’t find you a much better price. I stand a good chance of getting it at jobber cost for you, rather than retail.

I’ll also try to search out a local independent mechanic who’ll cut you a break. I do have some resources and contacts there in Las Vegas, and I’ll be glad to burn up the phones for you.

And before you spend a penny on an alternator, (or any other parts), a good troubleshooting is in order. Could just be a loose ground wire somewhere in the charging system, which is not at all uncommon.

I’ve embedded my personal e mail in the comment system.

  4. Well, that sucks. If it was me, I’d go decorate the tree, bake some cookies, and put on some Christmas music anyway. Can’t ever let the Universe think that it’s won, dontcha know. But I’m contrary, stubborn and bitchy like that…

  5. (It won’t fix the car, but maybe you can get the kids a little something extra for when you DO get to see them.)

  7. I was checking out someone else’ blog randomly, and they mentioned your post and said that you might need some love… I hope all of your car problems get solved!

We recently had some car issues ourselves… 2 days before Thanksgiving, my husband was leaving to go to work. Our back gate is a slight hill down straight to a cross street. He stopped at the top of the hill, and before he knew it, the iced over path took over, and sent the car into oncoming traffic. Our 2001 Honda Accord met a Toyota Forerunner. Now, fortunately, the other person’s car got a small crack in their bumper… while ours… our bumper fell off, and our hood got bent in.

We were told that to fix the body will cost about $3000 at least. Instead, we opted to buy a used car. We both loved our Honda… so we’re still moaning and groaning on a daily basis that we now have to sit in a 1993 Saturn. Bleh.

I completely feel for you, and I hope that EVERYTHING works out!

Love you all! Thank you so much for everything. My humbug has been de-bahed (mostly) and the world started to turn again.
