Practice, Practice

DaGoddess @ 04:00

One of the photography message boards I read had this great IQ test. I went temporarily blind after I was done, but that’s beside the point. Take the test and let me know how you did. Artists of all kinds should really try this — it’s a good challenge. I scored a 7.

Now, as a warm up for this weekend, I thought I’d share a few photos from Labor Day weekend.

  1. Holy smokes. I got a 30, and I won’t even blame that on the fact that my child came in to bug me because I’d finished 3 of the 4 by then. But I already knew that I’m terrible with color – every time I’d bring home paint samples they would be wrong, but I could just describe what I wanted to my husband and he’d bring home something exactly right.

I like the last shot very much.

  2. These are great! I like the first one… you really captured a certain time and feeling…

…the test I’ll have to do at night… too bright in here right now! LOL!

  5. Somehow I knew everyone would like Sharon’s outfit. Isn’t that cool? So many more to capture this weekend!

And that test: Essential for anyone who uses a camera or paints or even pencils. Fun stuff!

  6. Heh, you snuck in there while I was commenting, Gene. Yeah, the last one is pretty cool, too. First time I’d met Red and had to go all the way up to Big Bear to do it…and he’s practically my neighbor. Go figure.

  7. I love these period pieces that you do. Such life in them that you don’t see in the photos from that time period.

Oh, and I got a 12 on that test.

  8. Well, as you know, part of the reason the old photos don’t have much life to them is because they had to hold still for so long just to have their photo taken. With all this new-fangled technology, it happens in the blink of an eye. The trick now is to make them look appropriately aged when the image warrants it.

  13. Hello Ms. J!
I love these portraits! As always, your work is sublime! I hadn’t conversed with you in quite some time, and I wanted to pop in and say hello. I see you are in the last of your PT, I hope it is going well (relatively speaking).
