Independence Day

DaGoddess @ 19:00

I’m normally out photographing fireworks and such at the moment, but yesterday was a big day and the aches and pains I feel today were well worth it.

It’s because of men, women, and families like those I met yesterday that we have the freedom we enjoy today. It’s always been because of those who sacrifice their comfort of home and the everyday joys that we live in Liberty, pursuing our happiness, whatever that might be.

Instead of posting photos of flags and fireworks, I give you some of today’s faces of Freedom.

There are many ways to celebrate our Independence, usually we spend the day with family and friends. The military, though, don’t always get that opportunity. So, as we party the day away, please take a moment to think of those who have made it all possible.

  1. Since I’m a nerd for the photojournalism approach – these may be some of your best evah. Love the lady clutching the jacket.

  2. Thanks, T!

She was a natural. She actually had to fight back the tears a couple times, but she really went all out creating the most amazing experience for her kids (and for me).

I had trouble out the ass during the day. Forgot my spare battery (sound familiar?) and then after borrowing someone else’s camera, ended up shooting for a good period of time before a card error popped up. I’m hoping I can transfer those files okay. I may have to borrow Patty’s card reader. Anyhow, despite all that? I only missed one scheduled session and ended up picking up someone else’s, evening things out. Was a fantastic day! The families were all amazing. I can’t wait to finish editing all the photos. There are so many….

  7. Wonderful pictures; they really capture both the mood and the place in time, if that makes sense.
Excellent work and I’m sure they appreciate your time and effort!

  9. Fabulous work, Joanie. They have to be so happy that they got you for their photographer.

Naturally– you know me– the B/W shot is my favorite. A very personal moment that this couple let us share. Yet is a timeless image, too. My thanks to them for that as well as for what they do for all of us.

As for the young man at the last photo here, those are mighty big boots he has to fill. Yet I have no doubt that someday they will be a perfect fit for him.

  11. Thank you, everyone. It was such an honor to photograph these families. And there are so many more to come. I have two homecomings this week, including another photographer’s husband’s return. It’s just too awesome to put into words.

Thank you for your encourage and support, not just of me, but of them.
