PROMPTuesday #28 - From Where I Came
It’s PROMPTuesday time again. And while I’m a little late, I’m doing my best to catch up to everything that’s been growing and growling for my attention whilst I’ve been gone. I’ve cleared out a few of the smaller items and am now ready to tackle something a bit heftier.
This week, tell us who you are, what’s inside, where you’re from. Share your memory fragments, those visions in your head, those figments that make you, you. What bits and pieces formed your whole? Are you whole? Tell us.
The original meme asked for the basic “I am from” format below, so let’s keep it like that. And if you know the person who created this meme in the first place, tell them thanks for me. I think it’s powerful.
I am from apple pancakes for dinner.
I am from driving past the Hansel and Gretel house when I was young and believing I might actually grow up to live there.
I am from macrame, but not crochet.
I am from chasing sunsets, meeting strange dogs, and interesting characters when my mom said, “hop in the car, girls!”
I am from doing it my way despite it being the more difficult way.
I am from parents who yelled and gave me curfews and boundaries.
I am from parents who loved me, even when I didn’t understand their methods.
I am from parents who made me a better human being and who I now understand a lot more.
I am from the creek in the woods.
I am from the thorns on the bushes in the woods.
I am from the dark shadows and the bright sunshine.
I am from the beach.
I am from the uncertainty and insecurity that many girls feel growing up.
I am from a mother who taught me to see through artistic eyes.
I am from a father who would take me out junking for car parts.
I am from the voice heard deep in the chest as my mom rocked me to sleep.
And mostly, I am from love.

I just get shivers reading this prompts. There’s just something profound and powerful about hearing where people are “from.”
And may I say, I extra double love this:
“I am from chasing sunsets, meeting strange dogs, and interesting characters when my mom said, “hop in the car, girls!””

My mom was pretty magical as far as moms go. She didn’t believe everything had to be structured all the time. She always “threatened” us with Christmas on the beach, complete with hot dogs and hamburgers. We always kind of wanted to try it but never did.

I know why I don’t do these… it just came to me… I come here and read yours and they are always so magical that I become totally invested in your story, whatever it is… like going to the movies and you become the heroine in your mind for a few days afterward.
You totally blow me away with your words AND your photographs. You should do a book. No, I mean by yourself.
Totally.

I am from high country.
I am from my great-grandpa’s banjo.
I am from my great-grandma’s chocolate cake.
I am from my grandpa’s workshop.
I am from my grandpa’s trains.
I am from my brother’s blue eyes and dimples and incorrigible puns.
I am from my father’s love of science and music.
I am from my mother’s gentle touch and unconditional support.
I am from darkness and fear.
I am from shards of dust amid panic.
I am from anxiety and depression.
I am from ancient castles on the Rhine and bridges over the Arno and paintings in the Louvre.
I am from desert and sea and fields of corn.
I am from liquid sunshine and fog and spiderwebs.
I am from bent and twisted metal.
I am from sorrow.
I am from solitude.
I am from bright petals and leaves and the attempt to recover that high country that was lost.

Pam, thank you. I’m putting you on retainer. As long as you don’t mind being paid in M&Ms, that is.
Bob, thanks! The countdown has begun!
Chris, tis a short trip so you’re welcome to join in the craziness. Of course, that means you have to be prepared to clean on occasion, but my rules are very flexible.
Jan, WHOA! Excellent! That totally captures you.

That was wonderful, as always. Nostalgia finely balanced with history makes this seem real and less dream-like, but it is still utterly immersed in poetry. Great job.

Thanks, Tins. I’m off to read yours now, because I know it’ll be a-ma-zing!

[...] come from…well, I believe I was asked and I answered that back in PROMPT #28. More literally — because I’m having a little fun and because I’m a smart ass [...]
